Bees collect resinous substances from the buds, bark, and young shoots of various trees and plants. They mix these plant resins with their own enzymes and beeswax to produce propolis, which is used to seal cracks in the hive and protect its internal environment.

For cosmetic applications, propolis extract is typically obtained through alcohol- or water-based extraction methods to concentrate its bioactive compounds.
